Pharmacy jobs will expose you to working in an industry that supplies, dispenses and manufactures
medicines and drugs to the community. At the same time, you will require interpersonal and
communication skills in order to advise customers on the appropriate use of products and/or
medication.
Depending on your level of expertise and skill, you may find a pharmacy job in hospitals,
community pharmacy, industry bodies or research divisions.
Community Pharmacy
The majority of pharmacy jobs are in community pharmacy. Community pharmacies can take many
different forms and operate either in neighbourhood shopping strips, large shopping centres,
within medical centres or as a larger discount pharmacy store.
Many community pharmacies are owned by a single pharmacist or by a number of pharmacists in
partnership. As such, working in these businesses, you will most likely be working under a
pharmacist or a pharmacist manager (sometimes called a pharmacist in charge).
Community pharmacies are the first point of call for members of the public to obtain medicines,
health related products, health related advice and often may also contain vitamins, cosmetics,
and other complimentary products.
Hospital Pharmacy
A hospital pharmacist operates as part of a healthcare team and is involved in monitoring
medication usage, counselling patients, providing drug information and advice to health professionals
and the community, conducting clinical trials and preparing products for patient use. They usually
have a lot of contact with other health professionals and members of the public.
Industrial Pharmacy
An industrial pharmacist is involved in research and the development, manufacture, testing, analysis
and marketing of pharmaceutical and medical products.
